20th Sunday after Pentecost
October 10, 2021

A place to call home: St. Mark’s Lutheran Church & School
In the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ, we welcome you to St. Mark’s. We especially welcome our guests who have joined us today.
We pray you will be strengthened by the good news about God’s grace, love, and forgiveness through Jesus.

Worship Focus: Do you have any expectations when it comes to all or some aspects of your life? It
is good to have expectations for ourselves and for others, especially if we are a parent. God has
expectations. He has laid them out in His Word. His expectations apply to all people no matter the
circumstance we/they find themselves in during this life. Today we focus on expectations related to
male and female, husband and wife, parents and children. God help us meet His expectations for our
good, and for the good of those in our life.

Worship Focus: Do you like to add salt on your food? For some this would be a firm NO due to
doctor’s orders, but for others the food might not be palatable if it were not for the added salt. When
it comes to God’s Word, we are encouraged to be and remain full of salt; this salt is good for us. And
it is this salt we are to pass on to others. What exactly is this salt, how can we keep on digesting this
salt, how can we pass it on to others? These and more questions will focus our attention through our
worship this day.

Worship Focus: Do you like to lose … at cards, on the court, at work, …? To one degree or
another each one of us has a competive bone in our body. Someone else does not like to lose, and
that is Satan; so much so he throws all that he can to knock us off of our walk with Jesus. Thankfully
someone else does not like to lose, and that is Jesus; He does not want to lose you, and He went to
great lengths to prove this. When it comes to your faith in Jesus, hold on to it at all costs; you are not
alone in making this happen … in fact, you are in a good place today to win.

Worship Focus:
Are you easily amazed by sites, news, etc? Are you amazed at God’s grace in your
life? If so, how do you show your amazement of either the physical or the spiritual? Maybe you tell
someone about what you have seen, or send a picture; do you do the same with what you have
spiritually? People in our Readings were amazed at what God can do. Are you? What many of them
did in their amazement, so we are to do also. Reflect on how you can do that in the upcoming week.

We pray you will be strengthened by the good news about God’s grace, love, and forgiveness through Jesus.

Worship Focus:
What is keeping you from putting God’s ways into practice on a daily basis? What
are you holding on to more than on the very words of God? What unnecessary guilt trips have you
put on others because of a tradition you want to hold on to? How many family members have been
pushed away from the church/house because of a human tradition? Let us make sure we say and do
what God wants and not hold up our human customs as God’s Word or if such make us a better
Christian. Jesus hits all of us today between the eyes, and the heart; but He also lifts us up and points
us to what we need to focus on. Celebrate His patience with us

Worship Focus:
What would you do to protect your life or the life of a loved from physical danger?
What are you willing to do to protect, not lose, your God-given faith in Jesus? Both of these
situations are real as evidenced with current events locally and across the world. What steps are we
willing to take to help our loved ones not lose the faith in Jesus they say they have but are not
providing evidence to match their confession? Dangers to faith are all around; yet take heart, God
has provided ways for us to keep it and strengthen it … including our being here today.

Would you consider yourself to be a smart person, a person who makes good
decisions, a person who can recognize foolishness or danger? One can be the smartest person in the
world but not have Jesus in their heart, that is not smart. Jesus points out what is smart and how to
get smart where it matters most, and why this is the case. Thank God for the ‘smarts’ He gives us,
along with ways to show we are smart.

Worship Focus:
When you are healthy and there is no common sense reason for you to be on a
liquid only diet, would you do it? Is that how we at times view our connection with God, there is no
reason for us not to be growing up in Him and yet we remain on a liquid diet or not even that?
Today we are here to get more than the liquid of God; we are here to receive the solid food He
provides through the Gospel in Word and Sacrament. Celebrate this opportunity, and other
opportunities like this one which enable us to grow up in our life with God.

Worship Focus:
Our bodies need food and water to exist. Not all foods, just as not all liquids, are
equal when it comes to providing our body with what it needs. Our soul needs nourishment; but not
all forms of nourishment available for the soul are what we need or good for us. Jesus has what we
need. He provides for both our body and our soul. Jesus tells us that when connected to Him we will
not go hungry or be thirsty where it matters most, and that is our soul. Take in and celebrate the
sustenance He provides.

Would you consider yourself to be a generous person (not just financially)? Do

directed your way? What is to prompt our generosity is not how others treat us but keeping in mind
what God gives to us … and without ceasing. His love is generous. In light of His generous love, He
calls and equips us to be generous … not just with words, but also with actions. God help us be the
